They are referred to as Dragons by westerners, but they are are actually Foo Dogs. Sometimes referred to as Lion Dogs, they are the creatures that you see statues of outside Chinese buildings. They keep bad spirits / bad luck at bay.
They’ll dance in at the start of the Birmingham Chinese New Year 2013 celebrations to frighten away bad luck and the shop keepers like to entice them with money in red envelopes to dance outside their business premises to bring good luck in the new year. They’ll also dance out again at the end so that you can travel home from the Chinese New Year Birmingham 2013 event in peace.
